The Speculative Horizons v.1 and v.1.5 Readers and Education Kit are now available to download from the website.

Speculative Horizons is a cross-cultural project initiated by artists, curators and educators that use lens-based mediums and research as the primary methods to facilitate and establish projects and connect with the world through and with photography. Working with a collaborative approach that embraces experiences across Australia, Kuwait, Japan and the United Kingdom we instigate, facilitate and manage exhibitions, symposia and education projects.

Although Team SH promised oursleves a break...

Speculative
Horizons
v.1.5 will be staged in Kuwait in January 2024 and continue expanding the dialogue between Kuwait and other regions in the Asia-Pacific through photography and an education program that explores the pedagogic possibilities for the medium of photography at secondary, territory and specialist levels. Excitingly, this interaction will be focused on an exhibition that features four Japan-based projects and continue to explore ideas associated with ‘Land’ and ‘People’ and introduce ‘Sea’ to further explore the interconnectedness between space/place and inhabitation/culture. The exhibition Evasive Sanctuaries explores physical and psychological spaces that have complex and multilayered significance, that are both remembered and imagined. It features Sean Lotman (US/JP), Moe Suzuki (JP), Hajime Kimura (JP) & Saad Alsharrah (KW).

The 2024 program introduces future activities for Speculative Horizons that will take place in Japan and expand to the greater Asia-Pacific Region.

I’ll be running this workshop at Linden New Art: Contemporary Photography & The Photobook is a 6-week program where participants develop a project to extend the possibilities and outcomes beyond files and prints into a photobook. Participants will develop refined camera craft techniques and compositional strategies to produce narrative-generating imagery. The program will also introduce concepts prevalent in contemporary practice – expanded documentary and the photobook. Once concluding the program, participants will have a conceptually-driven and technically-refined sequence of images in mock-up form and ready for publication.
